Our 1,150 Acre Playground
The Forest, Streams, Lakes and Mountains
What can we say, we love to be outdoors. Day Camp's program focuses on allowing campers to learn and explore the environment around them. An interpretative hike, searching for crayfish in the stream and learning to swim are examples of how campers enjoy being outside.
The Mary French Rockefeller Building
The Mary French Rockefeller Building serves as Day Camp's home base. The Welcome Center and Auditorium serve as all camp meeting locations throughout the day. There are eight activity rooms that groups use for crafts and rainy day activities.
The Dining Hall
The Dining Hall is a wonderfully delicious place! Day Camp serves hot meals for lunch and two snacks each day. During lunch, campers eat with their own group and counselor. Staff and volunteers are available to help younger campers with all of the choices available for them. A salad bar and soup are available along with milk.
Camp's Food service is in the forefront of the YMCA's Activate America initiatives. We support a healthy lifestyle in the foods we serve. We offer fresh vegetables on our salad bars for lunch and a vegetarian option to create a well balanced diet.
Over the past two years we have been reducing the fat and sugar in our menu while providing meals that campers will enjoy. Our spaghetti and ziti are now made with whole wheat. All oil is zero trans fat oil. Our juices at summer camp are a full 100% fruit juice. Snacks such as cookies have been replaced by fresh fruit such as grapes. We use lean meat in our menu items like ground turkey and turkey hot dogs. Our pizza is made with a part skim mozzarella cheese which reduces the fat.
We can accommodate dietary needs to include vegetarians and children with food-borne allergies. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Steve Sumnick our Food Service Director at ssumnick@ymcanyc.org.
The Waterfront
Day Camp's Waterfront is a safe, fun place at camp. Every camper from non-swimmers to advanced have the opportunity to enjoy the Waterfront each day. Our Waterfront is supervised by a trained YMCA Waterfront Director and certified YMCA lifeguards. During the first afternoon campers will have a Waterfront orientation with the Waterfront Director and may take a swim test allowing them to swim in deeper water. As a safety precaution, each swimmer who enters the Waterfront has a buddy and everyone participates in buddy checks throughout the swimming period.
