Health Information

Health Center
All school nurses have the Greenkill Health Center available to them if they so wish. The Health Center is located beneath the Dining Hall and the facility can be used by more than one school at a time. School nurses electing not to use the Health Center must inform the Program Director/Coordinators where their medications and health forms/emergency contact forms will be kept. Additionally it is highly recommended that medications be kept in a locked location as to ensure the safety of the participants.

The Health Center is equipped with 2 beds in an isolation room, a refrigerator, telephone, locked storage cabinets for medications and basic medical supplies listed below:

  • Antiseptics
  • Benadryl pills/liquid or spray
  • Caladryl Lotion/Gel
  • Chloraseptic throat spray
  • Hydrocortisone Crème
  • Ibuprophen Tablets/Liquid
  • Tylenol Tablets/Liquid(Acetaminophen)
  • Robitusin
  • Lozenges
  • Peppermints
  • Schools wishing to bring their own over-the-counter medications are more than welcome to do so.

Health Center is also equipped with:

  • Automated External Defibrillator
  • Emergency Oxygen
  • First Aid supplies-band aids, gauze, tape etc
  • Blood Pressure cuff
  • Thermometer
  • Stethoscope

Hospital and Doctor Visits
Injuries and illnesses requiring a doctor’s care are to be channeled through the Program Director or designee as to ensure the proper procedures are followed. In an emergency situation where a child must go to the hospital, it is recommended that the school nurse stays at Greenkill to care for other students. If 911 is to be called, school officials can make the call but must let the Program Director or a YMCA staff member know that emergency vehicles are arriving on property.

Insurance Option
Schools may opt to purchase medical insurance for the group at $7.00/student for the duration of their stay. This is not available to adults on the trip. Please contact Jason Marker at jmarker@ymcanyc.org for more information.

Early Departures
Should a child need to leave the facility early for health or other reasons, please notify the Program Director or designee. This is important so that we always know the exact makeup of the group we are serving. Please note that no child is to be taken off property without the school leadership’s knowledge. Greenkill staff cannot release a student to a parent/guardian. This responsibility rests with the school.

School Personnel & Chaperones
Many schools feel that it is important to have emergency contact information for their adults as well as their students. Please notify the Program Director of any injury or accident an adult may experience while at Greenkill, just as you do with a student.
