Tips for Planning Your Trip
Planning a trip can be stressful. Let us take on some of that load. We can help you plan and organize from the start. Here’s a few starting tips:
Determining your group’s size
There is a 10% clause in the contract, so you can bring up to 10% less than contracted for without penalty. If you are unsure, guess low, you can usually always increase your numbers without penalty.
Transportation
Chartered buses, private vehicles, company vans? We have parking for whatever mode you choose - we’ve even been known to land a few helicopters on our athletic field. We are only 12 minutes from public transportation (Metro-North NJ Transit Railroad or Shortline Bus Station). Depending on your group’s size and availability, we can arrange for transportation to and from the public transit stations at a minimal fee. There is also a town taxi service.
Deposit
Two weeks after booking, a 30% deposit is due. If you feel you may encounter some trouble here, please give us a call to discuss other options.
Room Assignments
After you obtain a layout of the lodge where your group will be staying, you can begin to do rooming assignments. We highly suggest you do this prior to arriving at Greenkill. Lodge layouts may be found on our Facilities page.
Linens
With the exception of Kleinstuber and two of the rooms in Evergreen, all guests must bring their own bedding and bath towels. A sleeping bag and pillow is the easiest, but twin sheets and a blanket can work too. There are soap dispensers at all of the sinks at Greenkill. Beyond that, all guests need to bring their own supplies.
Suggested Packing List for Participants
- Bedding
- Bath towel
- Personal toiletries
- Personal medications
- Clothing appropriate for the weather (the Greenkill Retreat Program Director can help you with this)
- Closed-toe shoes
- Flashlight
- Camera
- Bug repellent (if your stay is during Spring, Summer or Fall)
- Additional Suggested Packing List for the Group Leader
- First Aid Kit (Greenkill does not provide any supplies)
- Permission slips or health forms for any minors
- Cell phone
- Board games or playing cards (for downtime in the lodges)
- Driving directions
- Snacks or bottled water for the evening
- Marshmallows
Additional Suggestions for Teen and Youth Groups
Encourage a “no cell phone” and “no ipod” policy. While keeping in contact with home is important, a cell phone is, more often than not, a distraction during programs - as is the same with ipods. Ensure that your kids have the appropriate clothing and bedding prior to departing for Greenkill. The more your kids are prepared to stay at Greenkill, the more enjoyable everyone’s time will be.
