Reflections on camp

Today was our final day of 2010. Fine weather made the movement of camper luggage  a piece of cake – after of course our campers had packed it all up. This may sound simple – but girls who have been in camp for three and four weeks have an enormous amount of clothing and “stuff” – it all did manage to get bagged and tagged  and then make it home!

Our day was filled with tournament play, players signing volleyballs, exchanging emails and reminding friends about their facebook pages. Hugs for parents, hugs and tears as new found friends prepared to depart, awards and recognition for outstanding players. Many promises of “I’ll be back” or “see you next year” and “see you at club” were heard throughout the field house.

When most of the campers had departed, our staff got down to work getting the field house ready for Judo camp which starts on Sunday. All the ball carts were folded up, volleyballs packed away, nets taken down and stored, volleyball standards set into their holder, bulletin boards cleared… the field house was very quiet. The joyful shouts of “mine mine”, “I’ve got  it”, or shouts of elation from a successful play are all memories now of another successful summer.

Campers – keep us posted on what is happening with you – share your news and we will share it here! Mark  your calendars now for camp next summer – we can’t wait for you to come back!

Up the ladder

The giant’s ladder is one of the new elements in the teambuilding ropes course here at camp. Our select campers had the opportunity today to try this – and the results were amazing! It was a challenge that took courage, for some, more courage than they initially thought they had, but teamwork prevailed and they all accomplished  this. Watch for the pictures to be posted soon!  Great job ladies.

Tonight was our final skit night of the season and as always our campers continue to impress  with their talents. The campers are not only stars on the volleyball court but stars on stage. Hemlock 1 and Maple 8 were the winners of the cleanest bunk this week and both bunks enjoyed the pizza they had for dinner. Our campers have enjoyed a great week of volleyball and good times. As we wind down in preparation for tomorrows last day of volleyball camp for this year- a big thank you to all of the parents for sharing their campers with us – we have enjoyed our time with each of them!

Mid-week is the best!

Here is volleyball camp we work and play hard. Wednesday has  several attractive points that make us love this mid week day.

1] Sleeping in – on Wednesday the entire camp starts one hour later – that may not sound like much but ask any camper [and staff member] and we will all tell you how much we appreciate  that extra hour .

2] Cardboard boat regatta – this sounds impossible but it does work – sort of – each bunk is given a stack of cardboard boxes , roll of duct tape and 20 minutes to create a cardboard boat! Then they get to ask a coach, counselor or even the assistant camp director and camp program and retreat director to pilot their vessel in the race. It is very funny – the boats sink and fall apart, the pilots [ speaking for my self] need some serious practice and everyone laughs the entire time!  Hooray for Hemlock 1 – this weeks winner!

3] Ice Cream – what more needs to be said? our campers and staff all enjoy the Wednesday evening ice cream sundaes with all the fixings. It is a great social evening for the campers- first their ice cream and then time to finalize their skits for tomorrow nite.

After a quick dorm check and a reminder that we DO need to sleep – its time for lights out!
